Seun Kuti, a famous Afrobeat musician, appeared at the Yaba Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following a previous adjournment due to the Magistrate’s absence.
During the proceedings, the Nigerian Police attempted to bring fresh assault charges against Seun Kuti, but human rights attorney Femi Falana (SAN) intervened. Falana objected to the charges on the grounds that the Police had presented them in court without adhering to the 48-hour timeframe stipulated by the law. This violation denied the defendant sufficient time to prepare his defense. Furthermore, Falana argued that the Police’s failure to comply with the Magistrate’s order to send the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice was contemptuous.
As a result, the case has been adjourned until July 3, 2023, to allow for legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
