Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has hailed Nigeria’s 26 years of continuous democratic governance, describing the smooth transitions between administrations as a testament to the nation’s growing political maturity.
The governor expressed his views in a Democracy Day goodwill message issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ismaila Uba-Misilli, in Gombe today, as part of the celebrations marking June 12.

Yahaya acknowledged that although the democratic journey has not been without its difficulties, the country has made significant progress in establishing democratic ideals.
He noted that compared to many other African nations, Nigeria’s democratic experience reflects notable stability and political development.
He remarked, “Reaching 26 consecutive years of civilian rule is an extraordinary achievement for Nigeria. As Africa’s most populous democracy, the country has remained steadfast in its commitment to democratic values despite various socio-political and economic challenges.
“Our consistent ability to transfer power peacefully and manage national hurdles reflects a deepening democratic culture.”
Governor Yahaya described June 12 as a day to honour those who played vital roles in advocating for democracy, highlighting their dedication to liberty, justice, and national cohesion.
He emphasized that the day serves as a reminder of the enduring efforts and sacrifices made by these individuals in supporting and strengthening democracy in Nigeria.
Reflecting on Gombe State’s democratic progress, the governor pointed to the state’s development and transformation as evidence of democracy’s positive impact.
“From humble origins, Gombe has grown into one of Nigeria’s most rapidly advancing states,” he said. “Our achievements are rooted in democratic governance, strategic leadership, and the determination of our people.”
In his role as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Yahaya extended warm congratulations to President Bola Tinubu and saluted all democracy advocates, including the judiciary, legislature, and civil society groups.
He further applauded the media for their role in promoting democratic values, while cautioning against the dissemination of misinformation and divisive content.

Governor Yahaya encouraged the people of Gombe to continue to uphold unity, obey the law, and remain prayerful, stressing that national development depends on the collective efforts of all citizens.
