President Bola Tinubu has added two combat helicopters to the Nigerian Air Force’s arsenal as part of efforts to enhance national security.

The new aircraft were officially commissioned into the fleet during a ceremony marking the 61st anniversary of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
Vice President Kashim Shettima stood in for President Tinubu at the event, where the newly acquired helicopters—designated NAF544 and NAF545—were unveiled.
These additions are expected to significantly boost the military’s aerial capabilities in the fight against insecurity across the nation.
Speaking at the occasion in Abuja yesterday (15-05-2025), the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, announced that the Nigerian Air Force is set to take delivery of 49 more aircraft by the year 2027.

According to Abubakar, the Air Force has already acquired nine new aircraft since 2024, including four T-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360 planes, and the two Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters that were inducted during the ceremony.
Highlighting the federal government’s dedication to strengthening national defense, the Air Chief stated that the additional incoming fleet will include 10 more Agusta 109 Trekker helicopters, 12 A-1 Zulu attack helicopters, 20 M-346 fighter and ground-attack jets, and three CASA 295 medium airlift aircraft.
“These acquisitions align with Mr. President’s unwavering resolve to secure the country,” Abubakar noted.
