A Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced a convicted drug trafficker, Nnamani Sunday, to four years in prison without the option of a fine, for attempting to smuggle 800 grams of cannabis, also known as marijuana, into the United Kingdom.

The judgment, delivered by Justice Ayokunle Faji, came after Sunday was found guilty of violating Nigeria’s anti-narcotics laws. The court ruled that the defendant’s actions constituted a serious offense, warranting a stringent penalty.
Sunday’s arrest was facilitated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), which intercepted the illicit substance before it could be exported. Investigations revealed that the cannabis was cleverly concealed in a shipment destined for the UK.
The verdict serves as a warning to individuals involved in narcotics trafficking, emphasizing the Nigerian government’s commitment to combating the illicit drug trade. The NDLEA has been intensifying efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks, with several recent arrests and convictions.
Justice Faji’s decision underscores the judiciary’s resolve to tackle narcotics-related crimes. The four-year prison term without the option of a fine reflects the severity of the offense and the need to deter potential traffickers.
The NDLEA continues to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s anti-narcotics campaign, collaborating with law enforcement agencies to disrupt drug trafficking operations. This conviction demonstrates the agency’s unwavering dedication to protecting public safety and health.
